The Champalimaud Foundation conducts research in cutting-edge areas and prioritizes stimulating discoveries that benefit people, as well as sponsoring new standards of knowledge through innovation in biomedical science.

It is at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown and the Botton – Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Center, in Lisbon, that it develops its activity in the areas of cancer and neuroscience, through research programs and the provision of excellent clinical services, also developing a program to combat blindness with the annual awarding of the António Champalimaud Vision Prize.

To pursue its objectives of achieving significant scientific advances, the Champalimaud Foundation adopts the translational methodology, which establishes a direct and interdependent link between basic research and clinical activity. This is one of its fundamental principles of operation and the basis of its work.

The Foundation is located in the riverside area of Pedrouços. It is a privileged location where the Tagus River meets the Atlantic Ocean and from where Portuguese navigators set sail five centuries ago in search of the 'unknown'. The architectural project is by the Indian architect Charles Correa, who has strong personal and family ties to Goa.
